Smart PIM (Passive Intermodulation) Analysis and Remediation
Introduction
Scope of work: Passive intermodulation (PIM) occurs when signals from multiple high-power transmitters combine due to a non-linear object (or objects) in the Radio Frequency (RF) path. Mixed signals generate new frequencies that can degrade the overall performance of the system and raise the noise floor. Verveba Telecom was selected by one of the Tier 1 operators to develop a big data solution to reduce the cost of deployment of Band 14 by predicting the sites that would experience the interference in the future.
Challenge
Band 14 is a frequency used for public safety communications in the United States. We had a challenge to analyze 20,000 cell sites across US by looking at various data sets which included Site Information and Pictures to predict which sites will have Interference when launched in the future.
Solution
Our dedicated team of engineers built a smart scoring platform by analyzing various data sets and site pictures to come up with a score for each cell site. Cell sites which scored high on predictive tool for positive PIM were then selected for field visits. At the field visit various remediation techniques were used like PIM tape or Paint to reduce PIM.
Results
We analyzed over 20,000 cell sites across US and only 10% of the sites were required for field visits, which helped our client reduce the cost of PIM remediation by over 70%.

Testimonials
The Engineering team at Verveba is highly talented in their understanding of applying various statistical models to RF Engineering. Their application for desktop analysis for PIM Mitigation was very helpful for us to reduce number of field visits and helped us save millions of dollars on this deployment.
